In the winter of 2023, I first encountered the She folk songs while researching traditional music in Zhejiang, my home province. I was struck by how integral singing is to the She people’s daily lives, contrasting with the notion that music flourishes only in economically abundant societies. For the She, singing is not an art form that requires financial abundance but rather a way of life. This initial curiosity led me to visit Suichang in January 2024, where I recorded precious archives of local singers practicing this extinguishing art form, gained an overview of She culture but realized I needed to delve deeper into the music itself.
